Ever think of starting a business? Check out Startup Weekend November 15th in Prince George!
Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur? The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success? Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures.
It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011. The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.
All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback. Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. If you want to put yourself in the shoes of an entrepreneur, register now for the best weekend of your life!
What’s in it for me?
- Meet other startup enthusiasts such as designers, developers, engineers, artists, marketing peeps & change-makers
- Build a startup or product in less than 54 hours.
- Learn how to collaborate and work creatively with a team
- Build your network
- 6-7 meals and drinks provided (Plus the Finale Dinner at the Copper Pig)
- Prizes, swag, give-aways and more
- Fun, fun, fun!
But I’m not a programmer, am I still welcome? Startup Weekend isn’t just for developers! Teams, just like businesses need a diverse skill-set to succeed. On average, half of Startup Weekend participants have technical backgrounds, while the other possess a business mindset. Whether you’re primarily software developers, graphics designers or business people such as marketers – if you have great ideas you’re dying to share with the world, love learning and meeting new people, it’s not too late to sign up for Startup Weekend Prince George and gain a real hands-on startup experience unlike any other.
Do I have to come with a business idea? Not everyone has to have an idea. Come with an open mind and think about pitching a solution to a problem you think needs to be solved. It’s just a weekend… Just think about having fun. Perhaps your idea could be the next biggest thing!
(Tip: Northern BC is currently in a massive BOOM cycle in the industrial sector. Over $63 billion dollars are going to be invested in the North over the next 10 years through mining, LNG and other industrial projects. Ideas that help to solve industrial issues are in high demand. Do you see something that can help the industrial sector be more efficient? Save them time? Save them money? Make them cutting edge?)
